Tantra is strictly an initiatory tradition which means that the sacred and secret teachings are passed on in the age-old fashion of oral transmission from teacher to discipline.

In this respect Tantra is markedly different from male transmission which is also too often practiced and promoted by enthusiasts who have not been properly entitled but have acquired their knowledge largely from the books.
